NASA astronauts Elliot M. See, Jr. (left) and Charles A. Bassett, II (right) were scheduled to serve as command pilot and pilot for the Gemini 9 mission. While in training for this mission, they were on a flight into the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation’s St. Louis plant. During an instrument landing, the plane crashed and See, as well as Bassett, made the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in service to the nation and the space program on February 28, 1966.
