KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA (March 4, 2021) – In addition to taking home “Best Silver Coin” and “Best Contemporary Event Coin” at the 38th annual Coin of the Year (COTY) program presented by World Coin News and Krause Publications; the U.S. Mint's Apollo 11 Commemorative 5oz Silver Dollar has officially received the prestigious title, “Coin of the Year!”
This accolade recognizes and honors all involved in the genesis and production of this unique homage to humankind's greatest technological achievement and the continued advocacy of human spaceflight.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA (February 23, 2021) – The US Mint’s homage and celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing with their unique curved commemorative coin program enjoyed accolades from judges at the annual “Coin of the Year” international competition on February 5, 2021. Of the one hundred nominations and ten categories, the Apollo 11 Commemorative 5oz Silver Dollar took both “Best Contemporary Event Coin” and “Best Silver Coin” categories. Winners of each category move on toward the prestigious title, “Coin of the Year;” final round to be determined.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA (February 15, 2021) – Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) is offering a Special Label emblazoned with the Astronaut Memorial Foundation logo in honor of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut Christa McAuliffe, who is featured on a special 2021 United States Mint Commemorative Silver Dollar. McAuliffe, a civilian high school teacher, was among a crew of seven who were killed when Space Shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launching from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on January 28, 1986.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA (January 22, 2021) – The crews of Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia, as well as other fallen astronauts who lost their lives in the name of space exploration and discovery, will be honored by NASA Kennedy Space Center employees and guests with a ceremony at the Kennedy Visitor Complex’s Space Mirror Memorial on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at 11:00AM.
All CDC and local health and safety protocols related to the coronavirus — including physical distancing and face coverings — will be followed at the event, which is limited to 100 guests. For those unable to attend, the ceremony will be streamed live at www.facebook.com/NASAKennedy.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA (December 14, 2020) – The initial eighteen member squad of astronauts eligible for humankind’s return to the moon were announced during the eighth National Space Council meeting on Wednesday, December 9, 2020; which included veteran astronaut and Astronauts Memorial Foundation (AMF) Board Member Stephanie D. Wilson.
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA (April 4, 2020) – A very limited number of 2019 Apollo gold, silver, and clad commemorative coins have been graded and encapsulated by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) with special Apollo 13 50th anniversary inserts, each autographed by Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise to commemorate his historic mission. Fewer than three hundred of these coins across all denominations have been encapsulated, with populations of some fewer than 20. This new insert, which bears the April 11,1970 launch date, has been retired and no more will be produced.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 20, 2020) — Kaci Heins, Space Center University Director at Space Center Houston, has been selected to receive the 2020 Alan Shepard Technology in Education Award.
The award, named for Mercury and Apollo astronaut Alan Shepard, is presented jointly by the Space Foundation, the Astronauts Memorial Foundation (AMF), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), in recognition of creative and innovative use of technology by K–12 educators, or district-level education personnel.
The Astronauts Memorial Foundation (AMF) remembers Michael Alsbury on the 5th Anniversary of Alsbury making the ultimate sacrifice in service to the space program. On October 31, 2014, Alsbury, a private test pilot, lost his life during a test flight of SpaceShipTwo.
Educators who have demonstrated a commitment to inspiring students' interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) may apply now to receive the 2020 Alan Shepard Technology in Education Award.
The Astronauts Memorial Foundation Board of Directors unanimously voted to include private astronauts on the Space Mirror Memorial at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The board also voted to include Michael Alsbury, a private test pilot who died in a 2014 test flight of SpaceShipTwo, on the wall.
